Biography

Zhishu Chang (b. 1998) is a Chinese composer and performer based in Baltimore. Described as meticulous, adventurous, and inclusive, her music often draws influences from traditional Chinese music. Artistically, she strives to express humanity's sympathy and arouse concern for self-esteem, the natural environment, and intercultural reflections.

She has collaborated with leading groups and soloists including the JACK Quartet, Talea Ensemble, Ensemble Dal Niente, International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), Next Ensemble (mixed choir), Divertimento Ensemble, Beijing Contemporary Soloists, Ryan Muncy (of ICE), sheng artist Li-Chin Li, erhu player Siqi Tong, Kevin Thompson (of Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra), Peabody Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Academia China, China Huaxia National Orchestra, Valencia International Contemporary Ensemble (VICE), Trio Clavino, and Hopkins East Asian Traditional Music Ensemble (HEAT).

Her recent awards include the 2024 Baltimore Classical Guitar Society Commission Award (BCGS), First Prize in the 2022 Peabody DeLillo Composition Competition, Third Prize in the 2022 Malta International Composition Competition, the 2022 Otto Ortmann Prize in Composition, and Third Prize in the 2021 China Conservatory Orchestra Composition Competition. Some of her compositions are published by Schott Music Corporation, Modern Press, and Central Conservatory of Music Press.

As a performer, Zhishu plays piano, erhu, and pipa. She has worked with Orchestra Academia China, Peabody Symphony Orchestra, Peabody Composers Ensemble, and HEAT. A calligraphist as well, she loves immersing herself in the ripples of ink and colors on canvas, endeavoring to blend textures, visuals, and kinetic energy into a larger creative context.

Zhishu holds a BM and MM in composition from the China Conservatory of Music and an MM in composition from the Peabody Institute. She is currently pursuing a D.M.A. in composition at the Peabody Institute studying with Felipe Lara and Du Yun.
